3 Weeks "Smoke Free" !!!

I have finally created a cane that I'm happy with. Each one gets progressively better!

As I've stated in previous posts, this is really helping me in quitting smoking. Some friends suggested I also try hard candies. It was a big help to them.... Today I purchased the largest bag of Jolly Ranchers I have ever seen. I dug out a bunch of candy dishes and filled them and put them all over the house. I didn't even put a dent in the bag. I won't be smoking, but my teeth are gonna rot out of my head! :-)

"Die, die, die you ugly little monster!!!"

Two weeks and 4 days ago, I had my last cigarette. Wow! Putting that in writing really helps "seal the deal." Since telling a few folks this great news, I have found others who are also in various stages of "Quit." It's been a great help to hear what each other is going through and what we do to cope.

To help keep my hands busy, I've jumped back into creating with polymer clay. At this point, even if I couldn't create a lick, the therapy alone is worth it. Kneading and rolling out the clay.... there's just something about it that works for me right now.

Above is the start of a flower petal I'm learning to make. It's just amazing what you can create with this stuff with a little patience.

I'm trying to learn how to make various flowers using the Millefiori Technique. Millefiori is a glasswork technique which has been adapted to use with polymer clay. You create these long "Canes" and slice the flowers off like slice and bake cookies... (more food references to follow)

So far this process of learning and keeping my hands busy had really helped me not to light up and smoke. Although the junk food obsession I'm begining to notice has been kinda fun. I did read that quitting affects your blood sugar and you crave sweets. I'm not stressing it though. I'm really being quite good and buying fruit and trail mix and such. Believe me... I want to buy the Oreos, Hostess Cupcakes, or the Duncan Hines Creamy Milk Chocolate Frosting (you've never eaten frosting out of the can? Oh you haven't lived!) I have been successful so far in keeping that stuff out of the house. Well... okay, I did make brownies the other night... but that's all..... a girl's gotta have some reward for quitting :-).

Harvest Annie Appears In Her 1st Treasury!

Harvest Annie has made a guest appearance in her first Etsy Treasury this week. Theresa of Michigan Hemp selected her to join other shop items of Blues and Oranges for a stunning, eye appealing Treasury. Have a look at all the beautiful items in Michiganhemp's Treasury here.

I've only been an Etsian for a relatively short time, but in that short time, I have met some fabulous people who think nothing of helping out a "newbie" like me. I've been wanting feature some of the great shops and artists I've come to know on Etsy and to showcase the "Pay It Forward Mentality" that Etsy Artisians share. Nothing embraces that more than the Sneak Attack.

Theresa at michiganhemp is a very talented Hemp Artist. Her jewelry and sandals are exquisite. She is also very involved with the Sneak Attacks so I was thrilled when she agreed to let me interview her for my Featured Shop.

Tell me a little about your shop.
About six years ago, my husband and I were at a local craft show where there happen to be a hemp artist selling his jewelry. He had the cutest little hemp necklace, simple in design and made with all wooden beads. When I reached for the price tag, I just about choked! Don't get me wrong, I know the value of handmade, but this was way over priced. I knew then and there that I could make better jewelry from better supplies, and sell them at better prices! On our way home, we stopped at the local craft store, and I have been making hemp jewelry ever since!

My hemp jewelry is not your average style. I try to think outside the box and make items that would appeal to everyone. I believe that every hemp lover in the world deserves to be able to purchase their favorite piece without having to feel guilty about the price! Most of my inspiration comes from the beautiful lampwork pendants that I find. The colors and styles of the pendants lead the piece into it's own direction.

I read in your profile that you balance School, your shop and your family – How do you juggle all of this?
With a very patient family and little sleep! LOL Actually, I take all of my classes on line, so I am able to work at my own pace (within reason). My biggest hurdle is making myself leave Etsy long enough to get my homework done! :) Are there more hobbies that interest you?I absolutely love handmade lampwork items and stained glass! When I was in high school, I had the opportunity to make a couple of stained glass items. Ever since then, I have wanted to get back into it, but never seem to be able to find the time! I would also like to take a lampworking class sometime in the near future. Being able to make my own pendants for my jewelry is a goal of mine.

What is a Sneak Attack?

Besides the funnest thing to do on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday nights? Certain Etsy shops with little or no sales are chosen to be 'attacked'. The names of the chosen shops are announced at the predetermined time, then all of us "sneakers" swoop down into their shops and buy from them! This results in a huge surprise of sales to the unsuspecting victims!

There are many ways to participate in Sneak Attacks even if you cannot purchase that night, though. Stopping by the forum and chatting to help bump the thread is a great way to help and you get to meet some wonderful people in the process! Sponsors also are a huge part of the attacks. Without them to choose the shop and start the thread, it would be very difficult to keep the Attacks going every week.

There really are so many awesome people behind the Sneak Attacks, to fully understand, you should visit http://handmademovement.com/ or stop by the attack forum and feel the love! Sneak Attacks are a great way to help new and undiscovered Etsy shops get sales and boost their confidence. There's also no better way to welcome someone to the Etsy community.

Is there anything that you would like to include in the blog post I am preparing?
I would just like to add that Etsy has been such a wonderful experience for me. There is no other place like it. All of the people are the most caring, generous, helpful people that I have ever had the pleasure to get to know. I can honestly say that I have made better friends through Etsy than I have ever had! To anyone who is looking for an online venue to sell their wares: There Is NO WHERE better than Etsy!

Happy Memorial Weekend - Take A Moment

Memorial Weekend generally means a 3 day reprive from work, having bbqs, getting together with family and friends. Be sure to take a moment to remember why we celebrate Memorial Day! To honor the Soldiers, men and women, who have served our country so that we can enjoy the freedoms that we have today.
Ray Sorenson pays his respects by painting the FREEDOM ROCK every Memorial Day. View his awesome work at TheFreedomRock.com

Remembering Cody
~ We Love You and We Miss You~

Army Staff Sgt. Cody R. Legg, 23, Escondido
Soldier killed in Iraq was an 'Army guy' even as a boy
Joanna Lin, Los Angeles Times Staff Writer June 29, 2008

When it came time to play, Cody Legg had only one game: army. His mother, Bunnie Jacquay, recalled: "All the kids in the neighborhood would say, 'What do you want to do, Cody?' He'd say, 'Let's play army!' And they'd say, 'Again?' "

Legg was born in Escondido and spent his childhood climbing trees, playing flashlight tag and planning missions. Camouflage and face paint became a uniform he rarely took off. It was no surprise when he enlisted in the Army in his senior year at San Pasqual High School in Escondido."Literally, you could find him and walk by him, and he was always in that mode: wanting to be an Army guy," said his father, Dave Legg. But in April, while home on leave from his second tour in Iraq, Cody Legg spoke hopefully of his post-service plans: to become a firefighter or emergency medical technician, buy a house and start a future with his girlfriend.

On June 4, barely two months later, Army Staff Sgt. Cody Legg, 23, died of wounds suffered when his unit was attacked in Sharqat, about 50 miles from Mosul, Iraq, by forces using small-arms fire and hand grenades.Legg had been assigned to the 1st Battalion, 87th Infantry Regiment, 1st Brigade Combat Team, 10th Mountain Division (Light Infantry) at Ft. Drum, N.Y. He was one of three soldiers killed in the attack.Legg had been trying to save two soldiers in his unit. Jacquay recounted how Army officials described Legg's efforts to her: "He yelled, 'Man down! Man down! I'm going in,' and just took off to try to get them out of harm's way.
"Legg's mother remembers him as someone who often stood up for others. Ever since he was a child, Legg showed that he was "always looking out for the little guy," Jacquay said.In high school he participated in several informal training sessions for students planning to enlist. Even then, said longtime friend Jason Dassow, Legg looked after the group."Even in a [pre-enlistment] exercise, Cody still made sure everyone in our unit stayed together, taking care of his soldiers just like a great person, leader and soldier does," Dassow, a petty officer second class and gunner's mate in the Navy, wrote in an e-mail.
Another childhood friend, Chris Lefever, said, "He's the best friend a guy could have: always looking out for you, always there if you needed him."Wherever Legg went -- at home in Escondido, Ft. Drum, on duty in Iraq -- happiness followed, his friends and family said."His joy of life, his smile, could light up a room," Jacquay said. "He just had a zest for life that was contagious.
"Dave Legg said his son could always make light of difficult circumstances, such as the weather in Iraq."He'd tell me how wonderful the weather was -- about 120, dust blowing, couldn't see 5 feet in front of him," he said. "He'd joke that he wasn't going to purchase any land there."Aside from these jokes, he didn't talk much about his war experiences, his parents said.Jacquay said that although he didn't volunteer information, Cody Legg would answer questions in a way that grounded and humbled friends and family at home."I received mothers' phone calls saying, 'Thank you so much. Now my child doesn't gripe that it's too hot,' " she said. "It seemed to broaden everybody's world a little bit."Jacquay said her son loved simple pleasures."The first thing he said when he came home in April on leave was, 'I want a peanut butter and jelly sandwich and a hot shower,' " she said, laughing. "He was a real down-to-earth guy."
Legg was buried at Fort Rosecrans National Cemetery. In addition to his parents, he is survived by a large extended family: two half-brothers, D.C. and Derek Legg; two stepbrothers; a stepfather; and a stepmother.

My 1st BNS - Buy and Stay

I'm currently involved in my 1st BNS (Buy 'n' Stay) thread. This is being run by some great shop owners at Etsy.com. This neat thread allows people to promote their shop by purchasing an item from the existing list. Once they have purchased an item, their shop is added to the list! Once you are added to the list, you just need to check in daily to stay active on the list. I have met some incredibly helpful and friendly people in this group. If you are interested in checking out our shops or joining in, you can view it here!

I am not Superwoman!

I often wonder how people do it. How do you hold down a full time job, take care of your family and ensure you are getting all the time in for your online shop? I have been reading many posts and articles and I have come to the conclusion that something has to suffer. I am not superwoman.
I did create a rigid schedule as many of the articles recommended. You know... 5am-6am check emails and orders, head to my day job, start dinner 4pm and work on creating items or finishing up works in progress, etc. I found this stressed me out more than anything and didn't allow me the uninhibited freedom to create. I lost the "fun" in my craft.

So now I make sure I do at least 2 things everyday toward the development of my shops. I do try to schedule time for taking photos as the natural light plays a role in my pictures. Other than that I have vowed to tackle 2 things daily. Whether that is posting my items, spending time in forums to promote my items, creating new items, preparing packages for shipping, whatever it is... I accomplish 2 of them. I find some nights I have to serve Mac n Cheese or Pancakes for dinner or the vacuuming suffers a bit and that's okay.

Stemware Flip Flops

These are my latest creation! They are coasters for your wine glass. They came about from getting together with my sisters and our friends. We inevitably set our wine down and ask.... "is that my glass or yours?" Now we each have our own variety of "Flip Flop" attached to our glass.

I will have many styles and colors available in the coming months so check out my shop and come back often to see all the new styles!.

POUNCE!

Have you played with Etsy's POUNCE yet. It is such a cool tool to check out shops that have yet to be discovered. You have to try it... it can be so hard to be discovered by shoppers among the many artisans on Etsy. I always try to seach through these stores at least once a week. You can access POUNCE from the Etsy home page. Scroll down about mid page and it is on the left navigation pane. Or click here POUNCE and select undiscovered.

Some of the busiest Etsy stores were undiscovered at some point!
